Service Description

Field Techniques for Reptiles & Amphibians Hands-on training in reptile and amphibian field survey techniques This multi-week course provides practical, field-based training in the methods used to locate, identify, document, and study reptiles and amphibians in natural landscapes. Designed for motivated students and adult learners, the course emphasizes hands-on skill development, ecological reasoning, and real survey conditions rather than simulated exercises or lecture-only instruction. Participants will learn how field biologists approach reptile and amphibian surveys, including how seasonality, habitat, and weather influence detection, how to select appropriate survey techniques, and how to collect and document observations ethically and safely. Instruction combines classroom sessions, guided field days, and independent project work. Course topics include species identification and natural history, phenology, survey design, active search techniques, amphibian survey methods, passive sampling approaches, basic handling and documentation, and applied data thinking. Later sessions shift toward student-designed mini-projects, allowing participants to practice selecting methods, collecting observations, and interpreting results within real-world constraints. Field sessions take place on a combination of private land and approved open space properties. Specific locations and logistics will be provided to enrolled students. This course is appropriate for motivated high school juniors and seniors, college students, naturalists, educators, environmental consultants, land managers, and adult learners seeking hands-on field experience with reptiles and amphibians. No prior field experience is required, but participants should be comfortable working outdoors and engaging thoughtfully with scientific concepts. An optional overnight field immersion is available as an add-on for those seeking extended time in the field.
