Salamander Awareness Sign Competition
Voting now open! Winners will be announced on Salamander Saturday (May 3rd).
Each spring, the arrival of rain signals the start of the annual tiger salamander breeding migration. These secretive amphibians make their way to temporary ponds and wetlands—often the very ones where they were hatched—to reproduce. However, their journey is filled with danger. As salamanders cross roads between their homes and their breeding ponds, many are struck and killed by vehicles, especially on rainy nights when visibility is low. Research has shown that traffic as low as 1 car per minute can reduce amphibian populations by 90 percent in some areas. Protecting these small but critically important creatures means raising awareness, creating safe passages, and reminding drivers to slow down during migration season.

Guardians of the Grasslands
Tuesday, May 27 | 7:15 - 8:45 PM
Rattlesnakes perform a variety of critical roles in our ecosystems, but are largely hated and feared. Non-avian reptiles and amphibians on the whole are frequently overlooked even by the groups tasked with protecting them and their habitats. Using real reptiles and amphibians to bring this talk to life, Cameron Young will lead a discussion of prairie rattlesnakes (Crotalus viridis) and other local species, exploring what makes these animals unique, how their conservation is intrinsically linked to the conservation of birds and local ecosystems, and the positive impacts these animals have on humans.
