Week 6 - Biology Lesson
Let's learn what a decomposer is and what its role in the ecosystem is.
Let's Make A Worm Jar!
Small or large mason jar with lid (poke holes in the lid)
Different types of soil, leaves, grass clippings
Fill your jar about 3/4 of the way full of soil, leaves, and grass clippings by alternating layers of material types. You want layers throughout the jar. Sprinkle water on top of your layers but not too much to make the jar soggy. Now put your worms on the top and close your jar. Once the worms have buried themselves, you can add kitchen scraps as needed to feed them.
Why did we have you sprinkle water on top of the soil/grass layers?
How long did it take for the layers of soil, leaves, and grass to disappear? What happened to them?
Do you have more worms now? Can you see baby worms in your jar?
